Why Do I Talk So Much About Learning Phonics
You may be asking Why Do I Talk So Much About Learning Phonics? As a former teacher I am a big proponent of teaching phonics because I know that this learning method is the basis that children need to become successful readers.
Allow me to give you this illustration to emphasis my point in the matter. Think about learning phonics as if you were building a house. In order to build a house you must start out on a firm foundation. If the foundation isn’t strong then the whole house is in danger of failing.
It is the same with learning phonics. Knowing phonics is the groundwork needed to learning to read. Understanding phonics doesn’t only affect your ability to read but it is also the building block for other areas of learning such as spelling, and writing. A good footing that begins with phonics will increase comprehension of all subjects in school.
I know that there is the phonics vs. whole language debate going on as approaches to teaching reading. Parents have many questions about what learning method is the best to use when it comes to teaching children how to read. I am not putting down the whole language method of learning how to read; it does have its good points.
I’m not saying that if you know phonics then that is all you need to be a great reader. What I am saying though is if you haven’t learned phonics you won’t be a great reader. The English language has a system of rules to follow. Its basis is in phonemic awareness and phonics. Having a firm foundation in learning phonics will increase you child’s reading fluency, reading vocabulary and reading comprehension.
Now you know why I talk so much about learning phonics. I am passionate on the subject because I know that learning phonics is the starting point for children to become successful readers. There are phonics reading programs available to parents that will help with teaching phonics to children. Choose one for yourself and get your child on the road to reading success.
