Where to Look for Canning and Preserving Utensils – Part 1

So you made the decision to start canning your own food.  If you’ve never tried this before you will need to learn about home canning. As with any new project it helps to have the best information to lessen the learning curve. This link is a great way to get started: Learning Canning and Preserving Food. Here we will go over the basic utensils that you will need to get started canning and preserving. This information will be broken down in a two part series in order to make it easy for you to follow along:

Part 1 – Basic Canning and Preserving Utensils: Things you probably already have in your kitchen that can be used for the canning process.

Part 2 – Basic Canning and Preserving Utensils: Things you probably don’t have, but need to get in order to start canning and preserving.

This post is intended to cover Part 1 of the series. You may be surprised at what you will find. So no more waiting, let’s get to the list.

Part 1- Basic Canning and Preserving Utensils

As mentioned before these are the items that you probably already have in your kitchen, but didn’t know that they could be used for canning purposes too. Consider using this as a practical guide for gathering your canning and preserving utensil needs before you start a canning project. Keep the list handy and readily available in order to gather the canning utensils you need when you get ready to begin preserving your food at home.

Here is the list:

  • Dish towels
  • Paper towels
  • Rubber spatula
  • Large stainless steel spoon
  • Wooden spoon/1 slotted
  • Tongs
  • Measuring cups & spoons
  • Cutting board
  • Vegetable brush
  • Colanders
  • Oven mitts/pot holders
  • Large mixing bowl
  • Peeler
  • Potato masher
  • Ladle
  • Paring knife & chef knife
  • Blender
  • Cooling Racks
  • Small sauce pan
  • Large sauce pan
  • Freezer bags
  • Permanent marker

Now that you see this list, isn’t a relief to realize that you already have many of these items in your kitchen? If you are missing a few listed, don’t worry. You won’t be using all of the items with every canning project. So this will give you time to get anything on the list you don’t currently have before you need the specific canning utensil.

This list is intended as an overall general canning supply list. It is not an end all, in fact you may have thought of something that has been left off the list. Let us know if we have missed anything that you might find helpful so that we can add it to the list.

Canning is a great activity to spend quality family bonding time together. Besides, having an extra pair of hands will definitely speed up the endeavor. Take it from me, having my in-laws over while canning has been a God-send. Not only do we get to share the outcomes of the healthy canned food but we also have special bonding time together that builds stronger relationships.
