There is at least one in every family or even amongst your group of friends. How many of you have ever had to face finding Unique Holiday Gifts for the Hard to Buy For crowd? I know I do every year. I think and think about coming up with new and creative gift ideas to give these people for Christmas and other occasions throughout the year.

You know who I am talking about. This is the type that either has everything already or they get a jumpstart on you by buying the gift that you had in mind for them before you get the chance to give the gift to them. Sound familiar?

Our adult kids are like that. They see something they like, they buy it. It sure makes things a bit difficult around the holidays to come up with gift giving ideas. Now they have kids of their own and they do the same thing for them which again gets a little tough on Grammie and Poppy to figure out what to do about Christmas presents. I keep reminding them as far back as October not to buy anything “gift wise” for themselves or the little ones so the rest of us can get in on the act. They only half-way listen but at least they tell me what they’ve bought so I can cross the item off my list. (more on that in a moment)

The other side of the coin are those who when you ask them what they would like for a holiday gift say something like, “Don’t get me anything, I already have everything I need.” The thing is there is a lot of truth to that statement. Quite a few of us for the most part do have
everything we need. But this time of year is different. During the holidays we are looking for gifts that people want but don’t necessarily get for themselves.

How to Find Out What Holiday Gifts To Buy

So how do you go about finding those unusual gifts for people who make it a little difficult to shop for them? Well one thing that I’ve learned over the years is to become a really good listener especially when you’re “listening” is undetected. Now I’m not talking about eaves dropping on conversations. (Although I have picked up a gift hint a time of two by just “happening” to overhear someone talking about something they would like to another person other than me) I am talking about truly listening to what others are talking about in just everyday normal conversations throughout the whole year. See my reconnaissance goes all year long not just around the holidays; after all birthdays, anniversaries, graduations and such have to have their own time too you know.

The next thing I do is to take notes on what’s being talked about. This is where it can get a little tricky. You have to be careful not to let on that you are writing down what they are talking about or they get suspicious. I try to keep a handy-dandy little notepad & pen with me wherever I go. There is always my “grocery list” on the fridge. (Sometimes I just flip the page if something noteworthy is mentioned and I can jot it down quickly.)

See I do a bit of a covert operation behind the backs of my family and friends and they don’t even realize it. This list helps me out all year so I can watch for sales, pick up a wanted gift for a birthday or other occasion besides the upcoming holiday gift, cross off something if they go ahead and get the item, and then store the gift in a container I hide away for when the present is needed. Pretty nifty huh?

Seriously you can get some really good ideas for unique holiday gifts by just “tuning in” to everyday conversations. Chances are if it is something they really want the item will be mentioned more than once and on different occasions. Let’s face it, most people will tell us what it is they are interested in if we pay close enough attention to them. Now remember the key is to write it down as soon as you can do so without being noticed so that you don’t forget what was said.

This post really got me thinking and searching. First off I thought about my current gift list for my own hard to buy for folks. Then I started wondering about the general population and what unusual gift ideas are out there this holiday season.

Now I can’t reveal the lists of presents I found for my crowd because they will probably read this post. I love to surprise them and I don’t want to tell them what their gifts are before they get them.
