How to Create Serenity in Your Daily Routine
When you hear the word “Serenity” most people associate it with the Serenity Prayer by Reinhold Niebuhr. I have always thought of that prayer as a beautiful piece of work. Whenever I read that passage it usually makes me smile.
Just this week however as I was reading through the March entries of my Simple Abundance book the author brought up an interesting point of view when it comes to the idea of thinking about Serenity. On the March 1st entry author Sarah Ban Breathnach states,
“I believe, however that the time has come for us to stop associating serenity with things that cannot be changed. For we can dramatically change the quality of our lives when we consciously seek to restore serenity to our daily endeavors”.
That really got me thinking and inspired this week’s Thankful Thursday post on How to Create Serenity in Your Daily Routine. Many women often feel the weight of the world is on their shoulders. It leaves us feeling pushed and pulled in all directions trying to be all things to everyone. Our hurry up and get this done lifestyles are filled with responsibilities and we don’t know when we could possibly squeeze in any time for serenity. You are not alone feeling this way because I often feel that way too.
What I realized after reading the passage this week though was that adding measures of serenity to my daily chores will actually help alleviate some of the hectic moments that I may face throughout the week. You are probably asking yourself, “Just how is that supposed to happen”, right? Well here is my plan of action to impose gaining a sense of serenity in my daily routine:
- Take a Breather – That’s right before beginning any new task just breathe in deeply and tell yourself all the good that will come of the day.
- Meditate – Taking time to meditate will start your day off with a peaceful serene feeling. Meditation takes on many forms. For me it is the quiet time in the mornings that I take to pray and give thanks for the blessings in my life. These moments stolen fill me with gratitude and I am better prepared to face the day. Practicing quiet personal reflection time is also an activity that you should encourage others in your home to participate in. Soon all members of your family will be starting to catch on to the idea of creating serenity around them.
- One Step at a Time – Instead of multi-tasking all of the chores I need to complete in my routine I have decided that the best way to get things done efficiently is to only attempt ONE thing at a time. I’ve told you before what a list maker I am. Now I take my list for the days household duties and finish one before attempting another. It gives me quite a feeling of accomplishment to check each off my list. This is keeping me from feeling overwhelmed and restores a sense of serenity to what I’ve gotten done.
At the end of the day I can sit back and reflect on all the things that have been achieved. Not only am I relieved but I am grateful too. I am proud of myself for taking this calm approach to finishing tasks. This has helped my mood overall. I feel more relaxed and a smile returns to my face. So tell me how are you creating serenity in your daily routine?
