Giving Back a Lesson for Young Children
Today I’d like to share a story with you. This is a tale about Giving Back; a Lesson for Young Children. It begins like this…I was talking to our daughter-in-law this weekend as she was getting out her Christmas decorations and starting to put them up. Beforehand though she enlisted the help of her eldest child to go through the toys in the “toy room” and pick out the ones that she and her little sister are no longer playing with or have outgrown. Now mind you nothing is wrong with these toys as both Mom and Dad are careful to have the kids put things away and not let them destroy any of them when playing.
She explained to the little girl that there are other kids a lot less fortunate than she and her sister and they might not get very many gifts this Christmas. She then said, “Wouldn’t it be nice to try to make some other kids happy by giving them some of your toys?” Our granddaughter agreed. She didn’t want to think of other kids being sad on Christmas morning because they didn’t have any presents under the tree. They then decided together to find out where the local Christmas Charity drop centers are located near where they live so they could take the toys there and bring some smiles to well deserving children.
If I sound like I am bragging a little well, I am because I am so very proud of what she’s doing and teaching our granddaughters. I am also extremely grateful for her and our son and daughter for the way in which they are raising their children. We are so blessed to have happy and healthy kids and grandkids that are so willing to give back to those who are needy. We are definitely thankful for that as well as the blessings to share in the lives of these warm hearted individuals.
What a great home activity and a wonderful example of family bonding time as well as a terrific lesson for teaching benevolence. This selfless act is something that will definitely stick in the child’s mind and she will begin to want to do more for others. Such a great way to set an example for her daughters and a fantastic legacy our daughter-in-law is passing on to them. Can you tell my heart is full of pride and admiration?
So now my question is for you; what have you done to give back to others lately? This has inspired me to think of others also. I have mentioned the idea of giving back on two of my previous posts one on Thankful Thursday titled Thank You to Veterans and the other was in my Countdown to Christmas post. You can follow the links to both of these worthwhile causes below.

This is your chance to give back to the soldiers overseas that do so much for us and will probably not have the luxury of spending the holidays with their own families by following this link to learn more:

With the holidays fast approaching let us be reminded that the true spirit of the season is about giving back. This idea should not be a lesson for just young children but for all of us to learn from. We as adults set the example for our little ones. Let’s make sure that we are role models that inspire each of them and ourselves to take action for creating a kinder, gentler world.
