Different Vegetable Garden Designs
The calendar says that Spring has finally arrived. Now as soon as the weather begins to cooperate it will be time to lay out our garden. I know I am growing impatient to start our vegetable garden this season. I can hardly wait to get my hands in the soil again. There is something almost magical about this time of year. Working outside in my own garden growing vegetables rekindles a new spirit of liveliness in me. It feels wonderful to be in the fresh air and sunshine again. Spring has always given me a sense of renewal of hope and aspirations for new beginnings.
Because of the size and amount of area we are blessed with on our property we raise vegetables in a traditional garden for most of the crops we produce. This year however we are going to try a few new gardening techniques that I would like to share with you. I wanted to let you know about some other types of Different Vegetable Garden Designs that you too may want to try out for yourselves. Starting a vegetable garden is a wonderful family bonding activity to share with every member of your clan.
This idea all came about because our granddaughters have decided that they want to learn about growing vegetables. They have helped Grammie and Poppy out in our garden in previous seasons but they have become interested in growing vegetables themselves. I can’t resist teaching them such valuable lessons but I will not be alone. Vegetable gardening has become a labor of love for me and I am happy to pass on this family bonding activity to our granddaughters Great Grandpa (my husband’s Dad) is our family’s master gardener and we love that this year our garden projects will be a 3 generational event.
The thing is that the girls don’t have as much room for planting at their house as we do here. So we had to come up with some alternatives for them in order to be able to start their gardening lessons. With a bit of research and help from Great Grandpa we have come up with a vegetable garden design that will fit their needs.
3 Types of Different Vegetable Garden Designs
There three main types of different vegetable garden designs that we will be discussing:
1. Traditional Vegetable Gardens
2. Container Vegetable Gardens
3. Raised Bed Vegetable Gardens
Following the links above will lead you to posts that are written specifically for each of these different vegetable garden designs. The information goes into great detail about what you can expect to learn about growing vegetables in traditional vegetable gardens, container vegetable gardens or raised bed vegetable gardens.
Traditional vegetable gardens are laid out in rows. Each row has a different type of vegetable. Our vegetable gardening experiences have mostly been with raising crops in a traditional vegetable garden. By this I mean we plant our vegetable seeds, live plants or root bulbs directly in the soil that we have worked up in our garden patch. We use a garden tiller on 4 plots of land to prepare the soil for planting. This is a fairly large area which you may not have the space for.
Container vegetable gardens work well for those who would like to grow your own vegetables but have limited space to work with. For instance people who live in cities but still have access to sunlight can utilize growing vegetables in containers because it does not take up a lot of room. There are also some very attractive containers for growing your own vegetables that will add to the aesthetic value of your space.
Raised bed vegetable gardens can be used for growing a variety of vegetables or fruits. Those who have access to the outdoors with a yard but not as much room as it takes to raise a traditional vegetable garden may chose this method of raising crops. There is a wide assortment of raised bed garden kits available on the market today that are both functional for growing your own vegetables and appealing to the eye as well.
In our own home vegetable garden we will still make use of the traditional vegetable garden design. However, making use of either container vegetable gardens or raised bed gardens will give you some ideas for growing your own vegetables if you have limited space available.
I know the two gardening concepts of container and raised bed gardening will help our girls out with their vegetable gardening activities this year. They are so excited about getting started with their own vegetable garden projects. Great Grandpa and I can hardly wait to show them how to begin and to keep the family tradition passed on.
Why not try different vegetable garden designs as a healthy home activity for your family bonding time? You may have found just what you need for growing vegetables yourself this season.
